Lanke, the blue blooded Palmwine Drinkard decides to go to the land of the dead in search of his tapster who has fallen to his death while tapping the juicy liquid from a palm tree. Lanke loves his palmwine, loves equally, the company of his fun seeking friends and so would go to any length to maintain this jolly state. The death of his tapster sends him on an adventure filled odyssey from where we may draw some life lessons.

From fair weather friendships or relationships as seen in the friends who were ready to abandon Lanke when it became obvious that freebies would cease with the demise of Alaba the tapster, to Bisi’s romp with Arewa Okunrin, where she learns the virtue of all that glitters not being gold and the overall futility of man’s insatiability, the play remains a worthy offering from the stables of master storytellers.

Rooted in Yoruba myths and lores, Kola Ogunmola’s stage adaptation of Amos Tutuola’s The Palmwine Drinkard takes us on an eventful journey of- if you like- self appraisal. It is a legacy, an ancient song on modern tongues.
